World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October. This year’s theme, set by the World Federation of Mental Health, is workplace mental health.
Accordingly, to mark World Mental Health Day, our team took a refreshing walk with guide dogs – one of our chosen charities this year – to boost our well being and raise awareness.
Both being surrounded by nature and spending time with dogs have proven beneficial impact on mental health. Dogs provide companionship, reduce stress, and help ease feelings of anxiety and depression. Studies show that interacting with dogs can lower cortisol levels (a stress hormone) and increase oxytocin, a hormone linked to bonding and happiness. Whether it’s taking a walk, petting, or simply being near a dog, these interactions can foster a sense of calm and connection.
For workplaces, dogs can create a more relaxed atmosphere, encouraging breaks and social interaction, both of which are key for maintaining positive mental health. Small gestures like this can make a significant difference, and it’s true to say that we came back to the office feeling happier and less stressed.
