Encouraging the Next Generation of Surveyors

With our sights set firmly on the future, encouraging the next generation to consider surveying as a career is an important part of our work. The profession is changing rapidly as new technology, sustainability priorities and a wider range of specialisms continue to shape the industry. Helping young people understand the variety of opportunities available is essential if we want to attract fresh talent and ensure the sector continues to thrive.

Just before the Christmas break, Senior Associate Director Miranda Anglias visited City of Bristol College South Bristol Skills Academy to speak with students about life as a surveyor and why it could be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice. Her visit offered students a clear and honest insight into the profession, from the practical realities of day-to-day work to the long term prospects that a career in surveying can provide.

Reflecting on the experience, Miranda said:
“One of the interesting challenges I’ve found after talking to students is that surveying is often not even on their radar. It is not until someone takes time to explain the many different pathways that surveying can lead to that students have their light bulb moment and start taking an interest.”

Many of the students were surprised by the range of roles within the profession. Conversations covered everything from working on major construction and infrastructure projects to supporting environmental management, heritage conservation and the use of advanced digital surveying techniques. For many, it was the first time they had seen how varied and impactful the work of a surveyor can be.

Visits like this form an important part of our commitment to outreach and education. By engaging directly with young people, we aim to challenge outdated perceptions, highlight the relevance of surveying in everyday life and show how surveyors play a vital role in shaping the places where we live, work and grow.

We would like to thank City of Bristol College South Bristol Skills Academy for hosting us and for giving us the opportunity to speak with their students.
