Finding Our Voice: Public Speaking Training at the Bristol Old Vic

Public speaking training at the old vic hartnell taylor cook sept 2025

At Hartnell Taylor Cook we’re always looking for ways to develop and support our people, and recently we organised an inspiring two-day public speaking training course at the historic Bristol Old Vic theatre for some of the team.

Led by Guy Hughes from The Vocal Studio, the workshop brought together Miranda Anglias, Ollie Walker-Savings, Joe Woodley, Jess Smith, Ollie Hodgson, Harry Perrey, Ed Peck and Tom Dadswell.

The aim of the course was to help us build confidence, improve clarity, and strengthen our storytelling skills; all key elements of effective communication, whether presenting to clients, leading meetings, or speaking at events.

We began the first day by exploring the foundations of a strong presentation through a session called “Preparing your toolkit: Mind, Voice & Body.” From there, we moved into storytelling techniques and content creation, learning how to craft messages that truly connect with an audience.

Day two saw us putting our new skills into practice. After an introduction to theatre presentation, we worked on voice projection, body language, and how to fill the space with presence and confidence. The highlight of the day was finally delivering the presentations we’d honed, which was a nerve-wracking, but ultimately rewarding experience.

We wrapped up the training with a final reflection on what we’d learned and how we can use these techniques in our day-to-day work.

A big thank you to Guy Hughes and The Vocal Studio for delivering such a dynamic and insightful course, and to the Bristol Old Vic for providing such an inspiring setting to learn in.
