Leading commercial property consultancy Hartnell Taylor Cook has today announced the completion of refurbishment works taking place at iconic heritage site Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. Contracted by Bristol City Council, the project has upgraded the Museum’s facilities to improve sustainability and care of their collections.

Taking just under two years, works at the Grade II Listed Building comprised of window replacement, repair and redecoration to its Conservation Lab to satisfy heritage requirements and maintain the structure; upgrading the mains switch gear; installing a damp proof membrane and gravity drainage in its Fine Art store; and conducting roof replacement and refurbishment works of the Natural History Office.
Sustainability was a key motivator in the refurbishment works, with the installation of new double glazed windows and lantern lights throughout the Conservation Lab and Natural History Office expected to significantly drive down energy costs and improve thermal performance across the site.
Hartnell Taylor Cook took the lead on project management, contract administration, Principal Designer duties and procurement; as well as M&E consultancy and surveying in fulfilling the project’s needs. This was completed in conjunction with structural engineer MESH Engineering, architects WHArchitects, contractor Ashcroft Services Ltd and scaffolding designer Optima Scaffold Designs LLP.
Commenting on the news, Miranda Anglias, Senior Associate Director at Hartnell Taylor Cook, said: “It was an absolute pleasure working on this flagship historic building. Many hours were lost in the museum and I particularly enjoyed admiring the artefacts while making my way from one site area to another.
“What a privilege to have been able to work on a cornerstone of Bristol’s proud heritage and cultural landscape, and a pleasure to have worked with such a lovely client team. I’m so pleased the project has been successfully completed and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery will be more equipped to welcome visitors for years to come.”
Phillip Walker, Head of Culture and Creative Industries at Bristol City Council, said: “The completion of these refurbishment works is the culmination of a major capital project to improve building infrastructure within Bristol Museum & Art Gallery – providing improvements to the care of our collections, research and education access and helping us become more sustainable.
“We are hugely grateful to our funding partners Arts Council England, Bristol Museums Development Trust and the amazing team of professionals working with us on the project – without them this wouldn’t have been possible. The renovations to our building and facilities are fantastic for the organisation, the safeguarding of our collections and the continued enjoyment of our visitors.”
