Hartnell Taylor Cook Joins the ‘Million Mile Beach Clean’ in Support of Surfers Against Sewage

There’s never a bad day to be beside the sea, and hot on the heels of last month’s volunteering day building a sensory woodland walk, we recently rolled up our trousers and took part in the Million Mile Beach Clean, a nationwide initiative led by charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS).

This flagship programme encourages volunteers across the UK to collectively clean one million miles of beaches, rivers, and green spaces each year, making this a powerful community-driven effort to protect natural environments and reduce pollution at scale.

A Hands-On Approach to Positive Impact

Our team gathered at Weston Super Mare at 10am, and spent the day clearing litter from around 4.5 miles of beach. By late afternoon, we’d collected six large bags of rubbish filled with everything from plastic bottles and wrappers to old fishing gear.

Getting our feet in the sand, the clean-up proved to be a welcome opportunity to contribute to a national cause and also a meaningful way for us to connect with the environment, promote sustainability, and make a tangible difference in the community. For us, supporting SAS means backing a cause that aligns with our values – one that has a national reach but also brings people together at a local level.

Why This Matters To Us

This beach clean ties in with our wider social value commitments and our goal of having a positive impact. In alignment with our core values, we partnered with Surfers Against Sewage, a respected UK-based charity that campaigns on some of the most pressing environmental issues facing our planet today, including:

  • Plastic Pollution – Tackling single-use plastics and encouraging more sustainable choices.
  • Water Quality – Challenging sewage discharges and advocating for cleaner bathing waters.
  • Climate Change – Raising awareness of the impacts of climate change on the marine environment.
  • Community Action – Empowering individuals and businesses across the UK to take positive, local action through initiatives like the Million Mile Clean.

Looking Ahead

We are proud to support initiatives that go beyond our day-to-day business and create lasting value for society and the environment. We’re proud to have taken part in the Million Mile Beach Clean and to have played a small role in protecting our coastline. It’s just one of the ways we’re bringing sustainability into what we do and showing that businesses like ours can be a force for good.

A big thank you to everyone who took part – we’re already looking forward to the next one!
