Over National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Dan Wear – Hartnell Taylor Cook’s first ever apprentice. Since joining us as a Finance Assistant over two years ago, Dan’s time here has seen him go from strength to strength. Let’s see how he’s found the last couple of years…
Making strides in apprenticeship
Since we last spoke with Dan, he’s now completed his level 2 exams, putting him well on the way to his final AAT accountancy qualifications. Now about one third of the way through his course, Dan’s daily life looks a little different than when he originally studied accountancy at college. When he joined us, Dan had never worked in an office environment, but this is now his new normal and something he thoroughly enjoys being a part of.
“It’s great to be so involved so quickly, that’s something I love about the apprenticeship structure. My colleagues are really supportive, but I also have the space to work and learn independently, which both help me gain valuable, first-hand experience on the job.”
A different challenge
The transition to a corporate environment can be a daunting one, but Dan quickly rose to the challenge. With it being encouraged to get stuck in from day one, Dan integrated quickly into life at Hartnell Taylor Cook, taking the increased workload and responsibility in his stride. It certainly helps if you love what you do on the daily – for Dan, that’s getting great satisfaction out of working with data across service charge reviews.
“My colleagues have been such great motivators since joining and have allowed me to really take ownership over my work. Yes, the accountancy exams are tricky and require a lot of work, but I genuinely enjoy the structure my days take now. I’d say I’ve definitely settled into a good routine, especially given I can plan regular revision sessions around work.”
A positive environment
When reflecting on his time at Hartnell Taylor Cook so far, it’s our team spirit that really stands out to Dan. With a strong support network around him, Dan has all the assistance he needs to accelerate his professional growth. This said, it’s ultimately Dan’s commitment to the process that is helping him to thrive.
“My advice for anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship is to commit to it fully. If you push yourself and want to be the best at what you do, you’ll progress and find success in the long run. Not only will your colleagues always be there to help, but they’ll also help to level you up and motivate you to work at the best of your ability.”
