For our final Bristol graduate interview of the series, we’re sitting down with Charlie Pooley to discuss his experience settling into the industry. With it being almost two years since he joined us, Charlie’s shared some reflections, advice and highlights of the beginning of his career in property and his time so far at Hartnell Taylor Cook.
Why property?
Growing up, Charlie observed with interest the projects his dad worked on as a civil engineer – though he ultimately decided he didn’t want to follow the same path.
“I saw how much my dad enjoyed his work, and it was never a mystery to me as to why. The ability to be on the move and be hands-on with such a diverse portfolio of projects so frequently is a unique draw of the industry.”
“I decided to chart my own course by going into surveying rather than engineering, and the role reinforces that I made the right choice. The variety of projects I get to engage in every day presents different challenges and opportunities, and I enjoy having such a range of work that each day is different.”
Life as a graduate at Hartnell Taylor Cook
Having studied at the University of the West of England, Charlie often saw Hartnell Taylor Cook representatives at careers days on campus.
“I was really excited by the graduate scheme on offer: you get the opportunity to fully specialise from the get-go, but the flexibility to try other roles is also there if you’d like to take it up. It’s unique in comparison to other schemes I came across, and I’ve hugely enjoyed the opportunity to dip into other areas of business – it’s not only fascinating but also puts into perspective how and where I make a difference in my usual role.”
Personal development
On life and culture at Hartnell Taylor Cook, Charlie shares:
“My interpersonal skills have flourished here because I’ve felt just as valued as the next person, even if they’re board level. Confidence will come to you, but it certainly comes quicker when you feel you matter.”
Asked about his highlights so far, Charlie says one springs to mind in particular.
“One of the first acquisitions I assisted with was actually in my home town – so it was a sentimental project for quite a few reasons.”
