Pathways to property – Eric Woollard

Pathways to property Eric Woollard Hartnell Taylor Cook

In part two of our ongoing series of interviews with our graduates, we’re pleased to be sitting down with Eric Woollard, a Graduate Property Asset Management Surveyor in our Bristol office. Read on to find out more about Eric’s role, pathway into the industry and first eleven months here at Hartnell Taylor Cook . . .

Why property?

Being an animal lover, he initially planned to become a vet, however, after an intense internship experience, Eric quickly decided it wasn’t for him. In considering other fields, a career in property caught his eye and he pursued several work placements – which kickstarted his passion for the industry.

“Working in property presents you with such a diverse portfolio of tasks that you’re always developing new skills.”

“I expected to learn a lot, and I definitely have; for example, having to pick up the phone to liaise with clients regularly has been great in honing my communication skills and confidence.”

The best parts of the job

Handling fascinating clients is an aspect Eric particularly enjoys. Working with one of our national clients allows him to travel across the country – from the Isles of Scilly to the Outer Hebrides.

“I was onsite in north Wales recently where we saw puffins. How many jobs give you that opportunity?”

The interactive and social part of working in property is another huge plus.

“Networking is always encouraged, and at events you meet people working across a range of specialisms. Having the chance to build connections and meet people who work in different fields but within the same industry is interesting, and something I really enjoy.”

Life at Hartnell Taylor Cook

Being able to experience both the Bristol and London offices appealed to Eric when he applied for the role – as did the size of the company.

“It’s small enough that everyone knows your name – from other graduates up to partners. But I still feel like a part of something big. Getting the chance to go to the London office always reinforces that.”

On his colleagues, Eric adds:

“My team is made up of great people, and I’m lucky to count them as friends as much as colleagues. The culture is amazing – I’d be happy to work with anyone across the company, that’s how lovely everyone is!”
