Work that works for all: the benefits of working at an independent business

Work that works for all: Kate Davis, Talen Manager, talks about the benefits of working at an independent business

Research has shown that lack of career progression and few development opportunities are the most common reasons for job dissatisfaction: issues that our very own Talent Manager, Kate Davis, often sees disproportionately impacting large corporates. Independent businesses, on the other hand, can offer a breath of fresh air and increased opportunities – read on to hear more from Kate about why this might be…

Less red tape, more growth

As this study reflects, all too often people find that their path to their dream job is blocked, as higher positions remain unavailable until the current holder moves on. What’s more, while waiting for the opportunity for a more senior role to come up, they are often held back from playing a part in exciting projects as these tend to be based on rank within the company.

At independent businesses, though, things can be different. Employees can expect to be exposed to a much greater range of work and roles from earlier on in their careers. This not only makes work more exciting, but also provides valuable experience that helps people develop in their careers at a faster pace.

Tailored development plans

The freedom from bureaucracy that smaller, independent businesses enjoy also allows new starters to thrive. People just starting out in their careers can expect to see their progression paths developed on a personal basis, growing from the ground up. These tailored growth plans, as well as direct exposure to senior leadership, inevitably leads to faster learning meaning people are able to take on challenging projects quicker and develop a greater wealth of experience.

A balance of personal and professional

Small companies promote better meshing of personal and professional lives by boasting close-knit teams and an engaging workplace atmosphere, environments much easier to cultivate on a smaller scale. This tends to mean that employers have a much better idea of how their employees are doing and are more able to understand the needs of employees, not to mention provide perks such as comprehensive benefits packages. By listening to and engaging with the needs of employees, we can help our teams, and our business as a whole, to thrive.
