Action

Acting as Project Managers/Contract Administrators, Hartnell Taylor Cook LLP’s Project and Building Consultancy team were appointed by Bristol City Council to manage the refurbishment of four areas of the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery which is a Grade II* Listed Building. The works included the following:

Section 1 Conservation Lab window replacement, external repairs and redecorations

Section 2 Mains switch gear upgrade

Section 3 Fine Art Store damp proofing works

Section 4 Natural History Office roof replacement and refurbishment

Challenges

Hartnell Taylor Cook began the project with a clearly defined scope. However, upon further investigation, it was discovered that the roof structure of the Natural History Office had been significantly weakened by long-standing water ingress, necessitating a complete rebuild. Consequently, additional approvals were required, including Listed Building Consent and Party Wall Awards.

The works were meticulously planned and sequenced to ensure minimal disruption, as the building remained fully operational throughout the project. This careful coordination was essential to avoid conflicts with high-value art exhibitions, museum events, and university examinations. Additionally, complex access arrangements were needed to facilitate the erection of scaffolding for the works. Several full museum shutdowns were also necessary to carry out the switchgear upgrade. All tasks had to be completed within a stringent timeframe to meet funding requirements.
