Leanne Jonas, our Director – Head of People, celebrates a decade of working at Hartnell Taylor Cook this week. Over the past decade, Leanne has become a central figure in the life of the business, guiding our people strategy, supporting colleagues at every stage of their careers and helping to shape the culture that underpins how we work.
As one of the first faces every new starter meets, and someone involved in so many behind‑the‑scenes processes that keep HTC running smoothly, she has a unique perspective on what makes our organisation tick. To mark this milestone, we asked Leanne ten questions – one for each year she has been with us – to reflect on her journey, the changes she has seen and what continues to inspire her in her role.
Looking back to your first day, what stands out most about joining the company ten years ago?
The people. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason.
What has changed the most in your role or in the business since you started?
I was the first HR professional to be hired at Hartnell Taylor Cook, and my role has changed considerably. The business has changed over the past ten years and therefore my role has too. My role started as being very transactional, for example writing contracts and filling in forms, and thankfully due to technology nowadays I can spend more time making an impact elsewhere.
Is there a project or moment from the past decade that you are particularly proud of?
There are two that come to mind: firstly, implementing a HRIS system and secondly, introducing enhanced benefits for my colleagues.
What has kept you motivated and inspired during your time here?
People are what motivate and inspire me; no two people are the same and it genuinely fascinates me how differently people work. It’s what got me into HR and its why I still enjoy my time at HTC.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your ten years with Hartnell Taylor Cook?
You can’t fix everything. Some people won’t change and some systems are flawed. But, I can say with confidence having stayed with one business for 10 years, this means you know where you can make an impact.
Who has had a meaningful impact on your journey here, and why?
Our team – office accounts (including some who have sadly moved on) has made the most impact on my journey here. Why? Because they are the hardest working, supportive and genuinely loyal people I have ever worked with.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the team?
Even if it has been a tough day there will be at least one person in the team that will make me laugh or bring a smile to my face
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their career with us, what would it be?
Not one piece of advice, I think several: listen, learn, work hard and roll your sleeves up, don’t sit back and wait for others to do it for you.
What are you looking forward to in the next chapter of your career?
I am looking forward to seeing how HTC continues to change in the next 10 years and also looking forward to see how progressive changes in employment law are.
